My son enjoys books as much as I do. He will soon be learning to read. I am always on the hunt for educational resources being an avid reader and a new homeschool mom. I received a complimentary box set of level one readers, as described below, to begin our beginning reader experience. My excitement to teach my son to read skyrocketed as I opened the box it came in. My son was equally excited about receiving new books in the mail.
This 4-Year-Old’s Experience with the Purple Turtle Graded Readers
My son enjoyed all twelve readers. The readers are full of words perfect for the first stages of reading. The topics covered included counting, shapes, colors, all which make for great review while learning to read. The other topics included manners and friendships to name a few. I personally would’ve written the story about the bad manners differently. However, this reader can still be used to teach my son (and yours) a more appropriate response to other’s bad behavior.
The books have held my son’s attention each time we open them. Not only were the illustrations colorful, the story was easily understood. Again, we are still in the stage of mom doing the reading. I do believe these readers will hold his attention and make learning to read an enjoyable process when that time comes.
While my first impression of the quality of the readers was not great, I quickly realized I wasn’t reviewing a set of books. These readers are made to be read the written in, much like a workbook. The back few pages have activities related to the topic of the book, including coloring and filling in answers.
One feature I especially like is the progress box on the front of each book. It has a checkbox for each stage of their progress:
- Read along
- Read aloud
- Read alone
These readers are a great addition to our chose curriculum for our youngest son. While we have chosen to homeschool him, these readers also make a great resource for parents of public school students.
