This Mom’s Review
So what’s this Total Family Makeover anyway? I read the book (provided to me in exchange for an honest review). It is one that isn’t going on my bookshelf anytime soon. As I read through the “8 Practical Steps to Making a Disciple at Home”, I saw where I missed the mark with my older two children, now teenagers. I also saw where I made a mark. Yet, this book isn’t meant to point fingers at bad parenting. It’s to teach parents how to model and train their children to be disciples that glorify God. As the author states, it’s “meant to be a lifelong pursuit, not a list to check off and then expect instant results.” Checking off lists is great for some things, but not parenting. I am laughing at myself because I am that list maker.
Those eight steps you will spend your parenting days mentoring and training your kiddos consist of praying, Bible reading, mentoring, community in church, rest, giving back, and sharing your faith. As I read this book, I found myself learning and being reminded (encouraged) of some disciplines I have let slip over time. It’s hard to be that ‘model’ when we aren’t doing it, right?!?
The book also includes practical approaches throughout the book. Yes, mom, you’ll be able to use those ideas as your own, along with ones that you are already doing.
The best part of the book is that Scripture is provided to support the message in this book. To take you further, there are group discussion and further study questions for each section.
The part of the book that I’m most eager to start working on is the mentoring section. I never thought of myself as a mentor to my own children, yet that’s exactly what we as parents are. It would be a great delight to have my children mentor others after having matured spiritually thanks to someone else’s mentoring.
While I have a little time to still mentor my teens, I have plenty of years to grow a disciple in my youngest, being only three years old. This is really one of the best books I’ve read in awhile. Like I said, it’s not being shelved anytime soon.
