Finding Encouragement in Troubling Times {1 Peter Study}: Week 9

@KregelBooks

It’s Week 9 in the Finding Encouragement in Troubling Times study I’m participating in.

{Did you read Week 1?  Week 2?  Week 3?  Week 4? Week 5? Week 6? Week 7?  Week 8?}

This Mom’s Review: Week 9

Today’s study is based on 1 Peter 5:1-14:

 1The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:

2Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

3Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being examples to the flock.

4And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

5Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

9Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

10But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

11To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

12By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.

13The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.

14Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Answer The Questions

This Scripture speaks to two generations: the elders and younger people.   I was asked the following questions, but before you read my answers, I want you to leave a comment below with your answers:

How important do you feel it is for the older generation to encourage the younger generation on their faith journey?

Does your church offer resources for its members to mentor others? If so, how have you participated? If not, what can you do to help your church develop a mentor ministry?

It is important – very important.  Why do I say this?

I was once the younger generation.

Because when I first started attending my current church, I had a troubled marriage.  A lady, whom I now call my friend, mentored me and helped me see a different side of my husband  unlike my worldly friends who helped me bash my husband.

I am also considered the older generation.

While I could still be considered part of the younger generation, I am also the older generation, as I am a 35 year old mother (to two teenagers) and also a Sunday School teacher.

I have been burdened for a while over abused and lost teenagers.  Instead of wanting my own way in the church and at home, I need to mature in Christ and develop His character, so that I can do something for these youngsters inside and outside of my church.

9780825441981Until I get a grip on my own spiritual walk, I won’t be able to lead others to Christ or be the shining light of Jesus Christ that some teenager may need to see, including those teenagers I’m raising in my own home.

As far as my church’s resources, they are very limited.  However, I have found that God really works on my spiritual growth when I study and prepare a lesson from scratch for Sunday School.  So, why not start from scratch in becoming a mentor within my own church?  I already have some books that could help me in this area.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this study!  It has really made me dig into God’s Word.
