Teen Book Review: Girl Talk With God by Susie Shellenberger

#teen

Conversations between God and a teenage girl inspire, teach, and motivate young women to pray and live a dynamic life for God. Most Christian teens don’t know how to pray. And when they do pray, they don’t know how to discern God’s voice. In Girl Talk With God, author Susie Shellenberger shows teens how to pray and challenges them to deepen specific areas in their lives through a series of conversations between God and a teenage girl.

As a trusted author and founder of Brio magazine, Shellenberger has proven a keen ability to reach this often-misunderstood age group with her signature blend of casual, non-threatening teaching.

Updated for teens in 2010, this book will teach girls what it means to pray and know God as Father and Friend.

Girl Talk With God

This Mom’s Review of Girl Talk With God

The book is written in a one-on-one dialogue between God and a teen girl.  These are conversations that come from the Holy Spirit and conscience speaking to the girl about sins in her life.  There are 23 conversations ranging from God’s love to sexual purity.

What I Like Most About This Book:

  • Coming from the view of a conversation with God, a teen is more likely to listen, as it’s not a book written by a nagging mom or judgmental old person, as some teens would see it.
  • The author is very upfront with personal topics such as making out, but in a very tactful manner.
  • The sexual purity chapter is a plus, as it points out to the teen that there is so much more to sexual purity than not having sexual intercourse.
  • The first chapter does an excellent job on showing a teen what true salvation is and isn’t, and in turn will help me in witnessing to others.
  • The chapters are divided up by subject matter, so a parent can direct their teen to that chapter if it is an issue.  Otherwise, a teen could read it cover-to-cover or just a chapter on what is bothering her.
  • As an adult, one of the chapters really made something clear that has been ever-so-confusing for me.  A light bulb came on!

I’ve read another book on boys, What Your Son Isn’t Telling You, co-written by the same author and it was equally helpful.

I received a copy of this book, in exchange for my honest review.  Teens and their parents can buy a copy via ThomasNelson.com or Amazon.com.
